Obama ‘Selfie’ among five prize-winning AFP images in NPPA’s 2014 “The Best of Photojournalism”.
The European Commission has given its decision on a complaint made in February 2010 by a German news agency against France for giving state aid to AFP. The decision recognizes the missions of general interest on an international level attributed to AFP and permits the compensation of the net cost by a State subsidy that respects European competition laws. “This decision is a crucial moment for AFP,” said AFP chairman Emmanuel Hoog.
Sardar Ahmad, a journalist at AFP’s Kabul bureau, was killed Thursday along with his wife and two of their children in an attack on the city’s Serena hotel. His youngest son was seriously injured in the attack.
Global news agency AFP has launched the 2014 edition of the Kate Webb Prize, which is awarded to a locally-hired journalist in Asia for exceptional coverage done in dangerous or difficult conditions. It carries a 3,000 euro (4,000 USD) cash prize and applications are open until April 18. The winner will be announced in May and will be invited to a prize-giving ceremony.
French AFP photographers Philippe Lopez and Jeff Pachoud have won first prizes in the “Spot News Single” and “Sport Feature Single” categories of the annual World Press Photo Awards.
